subject: Silk Ties - Buying, Caring And Cleaning [print this page]

Don't freak out when you hear silkDon't freak out when you hear silk. They are expensive and well liked by the fashion community for a reason. Silk is durable and they don't wash off easily. Cotton loses some of its colors after multiple wash but that just doesn't happen with silk.

Silk neckties are good investment because they keep their conditions intact for quite a long time and they stay smooth and good looking as well. In fact, such ties should be your number one choice when it comes to buying neckties.

Tie Buying Guide

Silk is a good material and not exactly cheap but don't go crazy either. There are a lot of good quality ties out there that will not break the bank. Do some research, the online one and the old fashioned asking around, before you make your purchase.

Touch the ties, check the sewing and the folds. Good quality neckties should feel smooth and slightly cool to the touch. Trust your eye, silk ties should give good shine but nothing garish or over the top. Untidy folds and sewing means the ties are not worth your money. There are better folded and sewn ties out there which more than possibly sell for less.

Caring for Silk Ties

There are fabric protection products out there and you can spray one of them on your silk ties beforehand. Identify events or situations which are not silk ties friendly. A toddler's birthday, places where open soup bowls are around or sport bars are probably not the safest places to be with your best silk ties.

If possible, remove your silk ties by unknotting them, instead of simply slipping them over your head. Store your silk ties by loosely rolling them. Don't go for those ties' hangers, they create unwanted creases.

Tip: Use a tie clip to make sure your necktie stay in place, instead of dipping itself into a thick tomato soup. Don't throw your tie over your shoulder before eating, it just cancels all the sophistication you radiate by wearing a silk tie. Use the napkin as a bib, it is standard practice and it effectively protects your silk tie. Another trick is to tuck your silk tie into your shirt under the second or third button of your shirt. Your tie is still in place and visible but also protected from potential stains. You can simply pull the tie out post dining.

Silk Tie Cleaning Tips

Ties are not meant to be washed, laundered or dry cleaned. They don't mix well with water, being delicate and all. When your tie collides with staining culprits like ketchup, chili sauce or their other friends, you need to act immediately. Use a paper towel to dab stain remover to your silk tie. If you don't have any stain remover handy, you can use a napkin dipped in a little seltzer. If what is staining your silk ties is grease, use talcum powder or cornstarch to absorb the oily substance. Let it do its magic and then brush off with a clean soft cloth. Repeat if necessary.
