subject: Information On Pregnancy And Maternity Advice [print this page] Giving birth to a child is the most wonderful event any woman could hope to experience. Whether you are already pregnant or still trying to get pregnant, you will need to get some pregnancy and maternity advice. During this period you must ensure that you stay in good health generally as this will affect your baby.
The term is split into three trimesters. During the embryonic stage which starts at five weeks, the spinal cord, brain and the nerves will be forming. The heart will be formed from a tube on the front of the embryo. Facial characteristics start forming. The eyes and the ears begin to form and link to the brain.
The meeting of tissue will start forming the nose, the jaw and the lips, the cheeks and the forehead. The nasal passage, the mouth including the taste buds will be in its initial stages. The formation and shape of the legs and the arms will commence. A penis or a vagina will start forming, but the sex of the baby is indeterminable. The muscles will start forming and there could be slight movement, but you will be unable to feel it.
The changes you will undergo will be an expanded waistline. Frequent urination; constipation and heartburn may start. Other changes can include lightheadedness, changes in your skin, vaginal changes and swollen or tender breasts.
During the second trimester the baby will start hearing sounds like your heartbeat. The hearing will improve and at around the 18th week your voice will be heard. The eyes might open, but sight will only happen in the next trimester. The baby will be moving constantly, but you will only start feeling movement from the 20th week. If you have an ultrasound a few weeks into this trimester, you may be able to find out the sex.
Your body experiences during this trimester will include swelling of the feet, of the hands and of the ankles. You may start suffering with severe backache and your hips and pelvis may be painful too. The changes in your skin may cause dark patches on your face.
The final trimester starts at 27 weeks and continues to the end. There will be response from the baby upon hearing your voice. He will respond to this by moving. Although sight will not be fully developed, bright light will be able to be perceived. By now there are nails on the fingers as well as on the toes. The waxy substance and the fine hair that had been covering the body until now will fall off. The final organ that develops is the lungs. In preparation for birth, he or she will start turning into an upside down position in the uterus. The head will rest on your pubic bone.
All the symptoms, pain and discomfort that you endured during the previous trimester may well worsen during this trimester. Sleep will elude you as you will not be able to find a comfortable position. Do not expect as much movement from the baby as previously. He or she would have grown to full term and will not have much space to move around in.
