Deep Tissue Massage: Alleviate Pain More Effectively

Are those muscles aching? Have they been aching forever? Over the counter medications often don't work, and nobody wants to be on long term prescription medication. Everyone has stress with work, income or other factors in life. You don't have to put up with the pain. These problems can be deep within the connective tissue, and that calls for a deep tissue massage. Here's what it's all about.

Have you ever had a massage? Not just a regular massage, but a deep tissue massage. Do you think this is something new? No, it is not a new medical breakthrough, this art has been practiced throughout the world. Chinese records dating back 3,000 years document its use; the ancient Hindus, Persians and Egyptians applied forms of massage for many ailments; and even Hippocrates wrote papers recommending the use of rubbing and friction for joint and circulatory problems. Massage is the manipulation of superficial layers of muscle and connective tissue. This is done to enhance function and promote relaxation and well-being. There are so, so many versions of this massage therapy, over 250 to be precise. They include tapping, kneading, vibration, rocking, applying pressure to muscles, stroking and compression.

When dealing with deep tissue pain, you may want to investigate deep tissue massage. This is specifically aimed at realigning deep muscle layers, stiff necks, shoulders and lower back pain. Bands of painful tissue can cause chronic muscle tension and discomfort. A deep tissue massage involves deep slow rubbing that concentrates on specific areas. It gets into the connective tissue, not just the superficial tissue. A deep tissue masseuse will use tools of ceramic, glass and wood. He/she will also use elbows and fingers, as well as hands and arms. A classical masseuse will use just hands and arms. Most massage therapist are qualified in some sort of deep tissue massage, but there are specialists.

With any massage, special equipment is used for deep tissue massage. As these therapists are self-employed, he/she will have his/her own equipment consisting of a table with a horseshoe shaped head support for ease of breathing while lying face-down. It has a padded surface which is easy to keep clean and remain hygienic. Mats and pillows are also used for additional support. With the increased interest in massage therapy, this job field is growing.
