Is Your Business Really Overwhelming You?

"The world is too big for us. Too much is going on. Too many crimes, too much violence and excitement. Try as you will, you get behind in the race in spite of yourself. It is an incessant strain to keep pace, and still you lose ground. Science empties its discoveries on you so fast you stagger beneath them in hopeless bewilderness....Everything is high-pressure. Human nature can't endure much more."

Atlantic Journal Editorial, June 16, 1833

As you read this quote you were probably shaking your head in agreement...until you got to the date. Who knew that so much was going on in 1833!

It is easy to feel overwhelmed, but are we really? After all, this author felt that way when there was certainly much less going on.

Business can seem the same way, but is it that we are really overwhelmed, or that we just can't figure out what is important? In any business we can certainly let things get out of hand. There are always more training calls, more research to do on products, more books to read, and the list goes on and on.

But do these things really add value to your business? Is this information really something you need? Maybe the answer is yes, maybe it is no. How do you decide?

As often happens in business, everything goes back to your goals. What are you trying to accomplish?

If one of your goals is recruiting heavily into your business, then the training call on prospecting might be an important component of reaching that goal.

Are you going to present your products to a potential retail customer? Then spending some time learning the details of the products is probably going to be important.

If you are in multilevel marketing, remember that the company is trying to provide information to a very diverse group of distributors. They try to supply any information that any of their distributors might need at any time, so the volume can be quite immense.

It doesn't mean they expect you to learn absolutely everything there is to know all at the same time. It is up to you to determine what information you need and when you need it.

The value of information is determined by its importance and value to you. You determine what is valuable to you by letting your goals determine what is important. Don't let information overwhelm your focus.
