Is Breast Augmentation Or Reduction Surgery Right For You?

As a woman, sometimes feeling comfortable in your own skin can be challenging. The physical pain of having large breasts can be a serious medical issue. Sometimes you just want your breasts to be proportionate to the rest of your body. There are two main types of breast surgery, breast augmentation and breast reduction surgeries. The two surgeries are very different and have very different results.

Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement, breast enhancement, breast implants and the scientific term augmentation mammoplasty, is a form of breast surgery that is done to enhance the breast size of a woman. Scarring, like any other surgery, is usually pink and firm for a little while and will tend to fade some after about six weeks. Your surgeon will go over all of the incision sites and type of surgery they will perform for the type of breast augmentation you are having.

The type of surgery you are having will determine where the scarring will be. There are several reasons why a woman would want the breast augmentation surgery. Women in their twenties usually just want to have larger breasts to feel more confident with their bodies. In other cases, women in their thirties, who have had children, choose to have breast augmentation surgery, wanting their breasts to look like they did when they were pregnant.

After pregnancy the breasts tend to go down in size and may start to become saggy from the stretching of pregnancy. These are typical candidates for breast augmentation surgery. Recovery for this surgery is about one week before the patient can return to work. Rest and minimal activities the first week are highly recommended.

Breast reduction surgery, also known as breast reconstruction and the scientific term reduction mammoplasty, is the breast surgery that removes excessive fatty tissue and skin to reduce the weight that is compressed on the chest by large breasts. Breast reduction surgery is also used to remove breast implants. Women who have severe back pain are very good candidates for the breast reduction surgery. Other women have problems with their daily tasks such as bathing, dressing, tasks at work and exercise because their breasts are too large.

Alleviating the weight can really improve the physical and emotional well being of a woman. After surgery, for the first few weeks, the patient will where some type of surgical bra to help support the breasts while recovering. Recovery time for this surgery is a little longer than breast augmentation surgery. Depending on the patient's type of job, they can return to work after 10 to 14 days.

During the initial consultation for both breast augmentation and breast reduction surgeries the surgeon will go over all the procedures and all questions that the patient may have before surgery. Preoperative and postoperative instructions will be given at this time as well. It is the surgeon's responsibility to make the patient feel confident in their abilities to change their lives for the better.
