subject: The Timeless Beauty And Magnificence Of Antique Bronze Statues [print this page]

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, bronze is: a metal alloy consisting primarily of copper, usually with tin as the main additive, but sometimes with other elements such as phosphorus, manganese, aluminum, or silicon. It is hard and brittle, and it was particularly significant in antiquity. Its popularity in ancient times was the reason why so many of the large, antique statues erected for deities were fashioned using bronze. Antique bronze statues are a part of the history of many countries, including Greece, Italy, and even the US.

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most well known antique bronze statues in the world. Anyone whos traveled from across the sea seeking the freedoms of America has seen and been awed by the size and grandeur of Lady Liberty. This antique bronze statue was designed by Frederic Bartholdi and finally dedicated on October 28, 1886. The statue was modeled after the written description of the Colossus of Rhodes, with the figure of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom as the main figure. This greatest of American antique bronze statues has been a symbol of the US for hundreds of years, and anyone visiting New York City should take the time to stand before her and thank her for the hope shes brought to millions.

The Colossus of Rhodes is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This statue is no longer in existence, but when it was still standing, in invoked awe and accolades for the Greek god of the sun, Helios. Helios was the patron god of the city of Rhodes, a port city in Greece that was a very important sea trade route for Greece. Unfortunately, the city was often besieged by invaders looking to capitalize on the citys wealth and strategic positioning. After a particularly unsuccessful attempt to capture the city, the invading army fled leaving behind most of their weapons. These weapons were sold, and the proceeds went to building a giant antique bronze statue to the god they believe protected them.

The statue was supposedly 107 feet tall, which made it one of the tallest statues in the ancient world, and most definitely the tallest of antique bronze statues. This antique bronze statue no longer stands, but the city of Rhodes will always be known for it.

Antique bronze statues always carry a story, and many of these stories are incredible and worthy of repeating. Though antique bronze statues eventually rust and fall apart, the statements they make while their still standing will last for generations.
