subject: Do All These Weight Loss Diets Really Work [print this page]

You only have to do a quick Internet search to see how many people are both searching for and offering fast weight loss diets and dieting systems. I'm sure you've seen all the "lose 30 pounds in 3 minutes" type of adverts, offering amazing results - usually by buying and consuming some expensive new hyped-up slimming aid, and/or following an amazing new program in which you eat only cheese for 3 days, followed by berries for another couple of days - and don't forget to drink lots of water!

Well OK, perhaps I'm exaggerating, but you know what I mean. There are some common reasons for wanting to lose weight quickly - usually to do with meeting an important deadline, such as an upcoming wedding; brides-to-be are probably the largest (excuse the pun) and most desperate group of fast weight loss wannabes - even if you've spent most of your adult life being unfavourable compared to certain larger mammals, you know that it is essential for you to have the figure of a Hollywood starlet on your big day...

Which is all very well, but there are a couple of issues to think about here;

1. Fast weight loss diets are - by definition - extreme diets that do little to improve your overall nutritional health. Why would you risk damaging your health for the sake of losing a few pounds quickly?

2. Dieting is usually a short-term measure that is rarely successful over the longer term. In fact, dieting is very often followed by weight gain which is greater than the amount of weight lost on the diet. This is because dieting usually involves engaging in a behaviour that isn't really part of your normal lifestyle, so at some point you will "revert to type" and get back to your usual lifestyle - which probably means returning to previous eating and activity habits...

So fast weight loss diets are basically a waste of time; they are unhealthy and even if you starve yourself for a couple of weeks, squeeze yourself into that fabulous wedding dress and look fantastic on your big day, imagine the disappointment in the post-wedding period when you start to pile the pounds back on again...

That said, there are some very effective ways to lose weight quickly, healthily and keep it off permanently. But to do this, you MUST start with changing your whole attitude to food and to life in general. Losing weight quickly, but properly, demands 2 things - a complete change of eating habits and a significant increase in activity levels. Yep, it's the dreaded "E" word - exercise!

Yes, you are going to have to change what you eat, but it's not about dieting. It's starting to eat sensible amounts of good, healthy food and significantly reducing the amount of junk food consumed. But this itself won't be sufficient. The real key will be becoming much more active, so that you start to burn many more calories than you consume. Do this and you will be amazed how quickly the pounds start to drop off. And a healthy exercise regime will have other incredibly positive effects on your overall health, which will leave you feeling so much more alive and motivated.

You should always avoid trying to lose weight too quickly. But if you really must engage in fast weight loss, remember that it's not about dieting, it's about a complete lifestyle change. Also Try This Weight Loss Meal Plan: Medifast
