subject: Driving & Losing Weight *** [print this page] Weight loss while you drive? Doesn't that sound hard to believe? Believe it. True, parking your fanny in the driver's seat and wheeling "Mom's taxi" to appointments and kids' activities can pack on the pounds. However, you can actually LOSE weight, but only if you do it right.
There are three reasons why driving around town can add to weight gain.
Driving puts you in reach of fast food and out of reach of your healthy weight loss foods at home
Driving is boring and stressful at the same time, so it triggers hunger and thirst
Driving is not good exercise - no matter how many times you have to swerve to avoid other cars
So, obviously, if you want to lose weight, you have to figure out how to fight these 3 fat traps. Here's a weight loss secret that works for me. Never - and I mean NEVER - leave home without healthy food in your purse, laptop bag or, better yet, cooler. Make sure it's something you like, of course, and bring enough for the day.
Some ideas?
Granola bars
Single serve packs of 100 calorie snacks or nuts
An apple
A banana
Packets of raisins
Veggies like carrot sticks or celery
As for exercise, it's possible to move around while you're driving. Shrug your shoulders, clench your calves and unclench them. When you're stopped at a light, lift your foot off the gas and move it around a little. Of course, be careful so that you don't get distracted, but just move as much as you can in your seat.
Better yet, get out as often as possible and stretch and take a little walk. Do you drop your daughter off at soccer and then sit there reading or watching the practice? Well, watching your kids is good, but you can do that and walk around at the same time.
Do you park as close as possible to the door when you shop? Find a parking spot farther away and walk briskly to the store, while swinging your arms just a little bit more exuberantly than you normally do. It gets your circulation going and your metabolism revving so you burn more fat.
If you have fifteen minutes between errands, what do you do? Park and read or eat something? Just sit in the car, waiting? Don't! Fifteen minutes can give you a chance to walk outside, breathe fresh air and feel the sun and the breeze on your skin, which is very good for you.
It also gives you a shot of Vitamin D and you know how important that is to your health. And did you know that Vitamin D also helps weight loss by boosting your immune system and decreasing inflammation, which can stall weight loss?
So, before you hit the road, hit the food cupboard and fill up your cooler or bag with some healthy snacks, so you won't fill up on empty calories. Take a little walk or do some stretching exercises before you go. Don't make mistakes when it comes to your weight loss plan. Also Try This Weight Loss Meal Plan: Medifast
