A statement on the band's official MySpace page said, "Mr. Rose, who was about to enter a security checkpoint at LAX when the altercation took place, was approached by a group of unchecked and unruly photographers, who became aggressive with the singer and female members of the traveling group."
There has been some dispute about whether there is video footage of Rose punching the paparazzo in the head. Rose and the band are currently on a tour that will take them through Southeast Asia, Canada and South America. No U.S. dates have been announced. The band refused to be categorized into the dance/pop genre, which was quickly gaining steam during the 1980s. Instead, Axl and the boys brought rough, tough, heavy, dirty and loud rock 'n' roll back to the charts. Rose screeched about sex, drugs and wild parties and quickly established the group's notorious reputation as the bad boys of rock.
Their debut album, Appetite for Destruction, was released in 1987 and although they quickly gained a following due to frequent live shows, the band really didn't see their popularity rise until MTV latched onto the single "Sweet Child O Mine." Both the song and the album rocketed to the number one spot, with "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Paradise City" also gaining good marks on the charts.
GN'R Lies followed and featured four new acoustic based songs alongside the tracks from their first EP. "Patience" was an instant hit off of the record, while "One in a Million" became a hugely controversial song thanks to Rose's tirade into prejudice, bigotry, violence and misogyny.
In 1991 the band released two follow-ups to Appetite for Destruction (Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II); critics felt that the efforts were much more ambitious by the band, as they tried their hand at being introspective. While they were popular, they were on par commercial with their first effort.
After that things started unraveling for the band members, highlighted especially by Rose's angry public tirades. The lineup changed numerous times throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, with Axl Rose staying on as the sole original member. Promises of an album with new material kept creeping up in music magazines and blogs, but nothing appeared to surface and fans began to lose hope that Guns N' Roses would deliver a new compilation of songs.
Finally, Chinese Democracy arrived in November 2008, the first studio album since the unpopular Spaghetti Incident, released in 1993. It debuted at the No. 3 spot on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum, signaling a comeback for the long-haired hooligans of the '80s.
