Tips on Reducing Your Gas Bills

Individuals and families all across the UK are taking steps to both conserve natural gas and save money. However, there's more to saving gas than monitoring your home's heating and hot water usage. In fact, there are a number of effective ways you can save gas and cut down on your gas bills some of which you may never even have thought of.

One way to ensure you're getting the most out of your heating system - and wasting as little as possible - is to have your boilers and furnaces professionally checked on a once-yearly basis. Doing so will ensure that your air filters are in good shape and that nothing is blocking your heat register which, in turn, means you'll get the maximum amount of heat from your system. This will prevent you from having to consistently turn up your heat or run it for long stretches of time, resulting in lower overall gas usage and reduced bills.

Another highly effective way to monitor gas usage is to purchase a programmable thermostat, which will control the temperature in your home while you're away - whether it's when you're at work, or on holiday. By setting a lower temperature for your home while you're away, you'll be saving a great deal of money on gas. You don't have to worry about your pipes freezing during the winter either. If you're out of town, you can set your thermostat to a temperature that's low enough to save you money, yet high enough to keep anything from freezing up. While a thermostat will cost you money up front, you can rest assured that it will save you both resources and money in the long run.

Insulation is yet another way to save gas and cut your bills. For instance, by wrapping an insulated blanket around your water heater and insulating your hot water pipes, you'll ensure they're not losing heat and having to compensate by using more gas. You can also insulate your windows, doors, and attics to help keep as much heat as possible inside during the winter.

Finally, remember that there are countless ways to cut down on gas usage with regard to everyday activities. Of course, taking shorter showers is one way to conserve; but installing a lower-flow shower head, running your washing machine and dish washer to capacity and air drying your clothes instead of using a gas dryer are just a few more ways to save. You can also wash your clothes at lower temperatures, fill your kettle with only as much water as you'll need, and close the damper and doors to your fireplace after use. Taking steps like these now - in addition to installing insulation and pursuing boiler maintenance - will help ensure that you'll see a difference in your household gas usage and benefit from cheap gas bills.
