The Senators, who won two out of their last six games, posted their first shutout this season. Although Elliot admitted Ottawa didn't have "Grade-A scoring chances," the goaltender gave his team credit for taking shots from the outside. Elliot continued to say the Senators were finally able to bang one of those outside shots home and they held off the Flyers on their power plays. The goaltender emphasized the importance of blocking Philadelphia's shots when they had the man advantage. Elliot said, "Those are the types of things that win you games."
The Flyers (14-14) were blanked for the third time in six games. They are 1-3 under new coach Peter Laviolette, who took over the coaching job after John Stevens was fired. Boucher explained how Foligno's goal got by him. The goaltender said, "There was a shot, I poked the rebound away and the guy came and I poked it as he was coming in. It rode up my stick and up, over, bounced and over my glove." Boucher stated it was a frustrating time for the Flyers.
Philadelphia lost six of seven before they removed Stevens from the bench and has scored only 11 goals in seven games (six of those goals were scored in a 6-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Dec. 8). The Flyers missed some prime scoring opportunities. They had a 5-on-3 power play in the first period, but Philadelphia couldn't cash in. Another chance came in the second period, when Matt Carle thought he scored a goal, but the referees waved the goal. They said Philadelphia's Scott Hartnell pushed Elliot into the net. The play was not reviewed.
Hartnell stated that he saw the puck between Elliot's legs at his goal skates. The forward proclaimed, "Before I touched him his goal skates were almost near the back of the net. I just was there pushing (the puck). From my vantage point, it was in the net." Hartnell had a chance to tie the game up 1-all with 5:47 remaining, but Elliot stretched across the net and robbed the forward of a sweet goal.
Hartnell acknowledged that Ottawa's defense "played pretty hard." He said the Senators blocked 20 to 25 shots and the Flyers couldn't get those pucks around the net. Ottawa coach Cory Clouston told the press any win on the road, especially at this time of year, was big. The coach added that Elliot played solid, while the defense did an excellent job "of blocking shots and getting in shooting lanes."
