subject: Losing Weight - Are You A Yo - Yo Dieter? [print this page]

The problem with dieting is that they do not work. They do not work in the sense that your weight stays off. Many people have a found a lot of success with certain diets and have lost a lot of weight. However, when it comes to keeping that weight off diets are not effective.

This is because diets are a quick fix. They are designed in way that gives you an weight loss eating program to follow over a certain period. Once that period is over that is it, youre on your own. There is no direction about how to maintain your new weight. A diets main aim is to lose weight. That is one reason why many people put the weight back on after successfully losing weight.

Another problem with dieting is that it is not natural. The whole basis of dieting is denial and restriction. It is restricting the food you like. In certain cases this is important especially, if you eat a lot of food high in saturated fats. However, psychologically this works against us. For most people, having to eat a limited diet of cucumbers and low fat yoghurt for 6 weeks would test the strongest willpower. That is why many people give up half way through.

There is also this belief that many people think that the effective way to lose and maintain weight is by going on a diet for a set period of time. After the diet has been successfully achieved they go back to their old eating habits. They then wonder soon after why they have put the weight back on again. The common reaction is they think the diet was not effective and then, they go on another one.

This common scenario is called yoyo dieting. Basically what this means is that you are constantly going on different diets and losing weight and putting it back on. This habit puts a huge amount of strain on the body and will lead to serious health complications in the long term. There is also the emotional pressure that comes with dieting when people are excited that they are losing weight and then get depressed as they begin to put it back on again. Over time the body becomes more adept at storing fat which makes dieting even more ineffective.

Always seek a doctors advice if you have a medical condition or food allergy before changing your diet.
