subject: Jui Jitsu Pro Gear: Buying a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono (Gi) [print this page]

There's nothing like getting a new Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono (gi) to train with, especially now because of all the different styles and designs available. The good news is that buying a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu kimono is not that difficult, meaning you are not going get ripped off as long as you buy a trusted name brand. Just be aware of how one type of gi fits differently than another. An example would be, some Gi's fit very tightly around the body, making it difficult for the opponent to grab the lapel. In contrast, some Gi's will fit very loosely allowing less restrictive movements. Read the description of the Gi to see how they are designed. You may just want a simple design, so again, just check out the descriptions to see what to look for.

A word of caution: Avoid buying any other Gi's designed for other martial arts. Using your old Karate Gi just wont cut it. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimonos are made so that they can be grabbed and "yanked" on. The other martial arts don't encounter those kinds of stresses on the Gi. This is why they usually tear after a few training sessions. Also avoid Judo Gi's specifically, because they are very loose fitting and again, are not as durable as a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono.

A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Kimono typically ranges from $130 to $200. Some are lower priced and some are higher priced. On the lower end, the quality is not very good and you may risk tearing but on the higher end, you're looking at elaborate designs or a reinforced lapel which may restrict movement making it uncomfortable to train in. Sticking within the middle of this range will offer quality at a fair price.

Sticking to these guidelines will enable you to train in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu kimono that you will enjoy and not spend too much for. Once you shop around and get an idea for what you want, go ahead a make your purchase. You'll be glad you did!
