subject: 6 Common Fad Diets Analyzed [print this page] The world seems to be gaining weight at an ever-increasing rate. And despite monumental efforts, the weight gain keeps on coming.
Unfortunately, many people would like to fix their weight issues with fly-by-night diets.
So, without further ado, here are some fad diets that might be ruining your progress:
1. Atkins-like diets: Eliminate carbs and life will become pure hell. Especially if you exercise on a regular basis. The main issue here is that your body is built to function at its best with a steady supply of carbs. Even your mood is under control by carbohydrate intake.
2. Endurance diets: Most endurance athletes eat a very high carb diet. And the government recommends the same type of diet for the general public. Well, the problem here is that most people aren't running all day as part of their training.
3. Diets with less than 10% fat: Ultra low levels of fat intake are absolutely horrible for your body. First, your cells will absorb less nutrients which means that more nutrients will go to fat cells. Second, you will get hungrier because of faster digestion rates.
4. MRP diets: The term meal replacement is a contradiction. You see, a packet of powder will never be able to replace a meal in its nutritional entirety. Even worse, having shakes all day will make you very hungry all the time.
5. High fruit plans: In excess, fruit is not good for you. In fact, it can do a lot of harm because it increases triglyceride and LDL production in your body. And once this happens your health will go downhill. Unfortunately, fruit has a lot of sugar in it.
6. Detoxification plans: Starvation will not make you healthier. In fact, it will most likely leave you with a slower metabolism which in turn will have you gaining weight in the long run. And keep in mind that there isn't any research demonstrating the effectiveness of detox plans.
Popular diets will come and go, but basic human physiology hasn't changed much in the last couple hundred thousand years. So think hard before going on the next fad diet!
