subject: The Man Who Wasn't There [print this page]

This was a little idea I came up with todayThis was a little idea I came up with today. The picture is one picture taken completely in camera without the aid of photoshop, other image manipulation software or a safety net! To some of you older snappers this may not seem that great, but I am really pleased that I was able to do this without any processing tricks. This photo has also given me food for thought in that I intend to produce a collection of images that were never there, as well as a collection of images portraying poems or rhymes. anyone wishing to take up this challenge please let me know how you get on.

Yesterday upon the stair

I saw a man who wasn't there

He wasn't there again today

Oh, how I wish he'd go away

When I came home last night at three

The man was waiting there for me

But when I looked around the hall

I couldn't see him there at all!

Go away, go away, don't you come back any more!

Go away, go away, and please don't slam the door

Last night I saw upon the stair

A little man who wasn't there

He wasn't there again today

Oh, how I wish he'd go away

How I did this Shot

I heard someone saying the rhyme on a television programme and that gave me the idea To take this shot. It would have been very easy using software such as photoshop, however my son was engrossed on the computer so I decided to try to produce the image in camera. Luckily it was already dark which meant I could get a low shutter speed. To maximise on this I set my s9600 up on a tripod, set the settings dial to shutter priority and adjusted the ISO rating to 800. This meant I could dial up 4 seconds on the shutter speed and still have a good depth of field. more importantly it would give me time to move. I set the auto timer to 10 seconds focused the camera and pressed the shutter. I then hopped into position and waited for the flashing count down light to turn solid.meaning the picture was being taken,as soon as the capture started I counted two seconds pause in my head and then quickly jumped out of shot for the remaining two seconds of the capture. This resulted in what you see, a two part shot with the stairs solid as they were there for the duration and a ghostly me . The best part of creating this ghost image was that I didn't even have to kill myself. No blood, mess or boring funeral.hope you enjoyed this and try it yourself.
