subject: The Pros And Cons Of Online Dating [print this page]

Online dating is a fun way of meeting new people and forming relationships. However there are pros and cons you should consider before signing up to a dating site.

The Pros

When dating online, you have access to a wider pool of potential dates. Chances are that you will meet several people that you like, whatever your requirements. You can specify your specific wants in potential partners, like religion, values and social status.

You know that everyone on the dating website is single and looking for a date; so you don't have the embarrassment of approaching someone in a bar and then having their girlfriend or boyfriend turn up while you are talking!

Email, phone and webcam are a brilliant way to slowly start getting to know someone before you meet them, unlike in a bar or club where you're thrown in at the deep end. So you can decide whether you have enough in common to want to meet them, without the worry of being rejected face-to-face. Likewise, if you are rejected by another subscriber on a dating site, it is less personal than if it was done in person.

Most online dating sites include personality profiles, so you can find potentially compatible partners easily. This would be much more difficult in real life - you can't reasonably bombard your date with the hundreds of questions a profile covers in advance for you.

Any sensitive things about you, or what you do or don't want in a partner can be stated clearly in your profile. This means that you filter out unsuitable partners at an early stage. This way you are performing very focussed searches for exactly the type of person you are looking for.

As a result of the large number of people registered with these sites and how focussed your profile is on finding the right person; you can search quickly and easily for a potential soul mate.

If you are just searching for companionship, then don't forget you can just search for friends, not necessarily partners.

Always remember, you are in control of your privacy and are able to discern who you want to give your personal information to. If you want to remain anonymous, only give out your name and contact details to select people of your choice.

You can often just sign up for a few weeks to 'dip your toe' before fully taking the plunge.

The Cons

People can lie about their age, or post fake pictures of themselves and unfortunately you can't see them when you chat to them over email. Some subscribers lie about their age, social or financial status or even gender! Because of the anonymous nature of the web, these sites do attract some nefarious characters. Trust your instincts and you'll soon be able to weed out the people who aren't genuine.

Some people think that online dating is for people who can't meet potential partners in real life. You may get some gentle ribbing from friends who don't take it very seriously.

Most sites have more female than male subscribers, so men will have to compete for female partners.

However, most people believe that the potential to find your soul mate is worth all of the cons. If you take some simple steps to stay safe online, you will find online dating a fun and rewarding experience.
