Phnom Penh Nightlife: Gay and Lesbian Nightlife in Phnom Penh

There is a bustling vibrant nightlife in Phnom Penh in the 21st century, and the city has not been slow to modernise itself in other ways too. There are many openly gay and lesbian themed bars available for tourists to frequent, and many others which may not be explicitly themed but are still gay friendly.

The Blue Chilli Bar on street 178 (just behind the National Museum and on the same block) is one of the more open examples. Run by a Khmer/Thai couple, the bar has a DJ who operates into the small hours, friendly staff and a hugely popular drag show which occurs regularly on Friday nights. Unlike some other bars in the town, too, there is a relative lack of professional' flirters.

Other open gay and lesbian themed bars include the Fly Lounge on #21AEo Street 148. On the last Saturday of every month, they have a Girls Only' evening, which has female DJs, R&B, dance music and pool parties; The Gloryhole, a gay dance club which operates on Thursday nights, and Mzone.

There are many other bars which may not be specifically gay themed but are still gay friendly. The once notorious Heart of Darkness bar, which is listed in many gay guides to the city, is said to be now predominantly straight (and a little more family friendly' than in past times), but remains gay friendly, and there are other examples. Regardless, gay tourists to Phnom Penh will certainly not be short of choices for night entertainment. There are many cheap Phnom Penh hotels nearby, and the area may even be worth a trip for gay tourists who are staying in a cheap Macao hotel as they can sample the nightlife.
