In an attempt to lose weight, people have started to diet a long, long time ago. Over the years, several people made claims about dieting. Without scientific proof or further study, the public began to accept these ideas about losing weight. Thanks to modern technology, scientists were able to validate these claims. Some of them were proven to be false; or in other words, myths. Here are some of the most common myths on weight loss.

First myth - food eaten late at night is converted directly to fats. This myth probably rooted from the idea that no energy is used when sleeping. In reality, the body still uses up energy while sleeping in order to fuel life sustaining physiological processes. However, these are only in few amounts. Still, the food taken at night is not going to be converted to fats directly. These are broken down into simpler forms and will serve as energy for the activities the next day.

Second myth - frozen fruits contain fewer nutrients than fresh fruits. Frozen fruits and fresh fruits differ from the time when they were harvested. In general, fresh fruits are harvested prior to ripening while frozen fruits are picked at a ripened stage. Frozen fruits, in order to prevent spoiling, are immediately placed in the freezer. But the nutrients remain locked within the fruits. When fresh fruits are placed in the refrigerator, the nutrients they contain will get fewer and fewer.

Third myth - when your body craves for a certain food, it means your body needs it. There is no scientific explanation that substantiates this claim. When you crave for a certain dish, it simply means you want to eat it. There are no nerve signals which tell you to eat that certain dish because your body requires it. Cravings are more of psychological rather than physiological. Ignoring your cravings does not pose any danger to your health.

Fourth myth - there are certain fruits and vegetables which can burn fat. A few of these fruits and vegetables that have the ability to burn fat are: celery, grapefruit, and cabbage. Although these are the kinds of food that contain low amounts of calories, they do not possess the ability to burn fats. These claims are not proven scientifically. The human body burns fats when energy is being used such as when working out. The body can not burn fat when more energy is being taken.
