subject: Healing PCOS with your diet [print this page]

No matter what anyone tells you, diet is a big part of a successful PCOS treatment. The key is to eat unprocessed and whole foods which do not cause your insulin levels to spike or remain high. This will help taper back PCOS related issues like obesity, hirutism, acne and a number of other things. The ideal PCOS diet is as follows.

Low Glycemic - Foods low on the glycemic index cause a slow and steady rise in insulin levels, if any at all. Refines, sugary and carb-laden foods cause your insulin levels to spike and should be avoided at all costs. This includes sodas, snack foods, candy, white breads and starches.

Alkaline - Keeping an optimal PH level in your body can greatly improve your PCOS. The idea behind eating alkaline is that certain foods have an acidic effect on our body and others have an alkaline effect. In order to keep a healthy PH balance in our bodies we should consume 80% alkaline foods and 20% acidic. The typical American diet is highly acidic, which can be a breeding ground for disease, cancer and..you guessed it...cysts. Here is a wonderful list of alkaline and acidic foods.

Gluten Free - There are an increasing amount of studies that link gluten intolerance to PCOS. Some say that PCOS and Celiac disease go hand in hand. I can personally say that after cutting gluten out of my diet, my symptoms are 90% better.

All in all, following a diet that consists of whole, unrefined plant-based foods is the best PCOS treatment without the use of dangerous medications or other costly treatment.
