10 Different Items You Probably Didn't Realise Were Australian

Planning on Australia immigration? Take a look through these 10 inventions so you can impress your new Australian friends with your Down Under knowledge.

1. Combine harvester - often regarded as a British invention, the combine harvester (then known as a grain stripper) was developed by Hugh Victor McKay and patented in 1886. Going on to be used worldwide, it's often argued to be one of the most beneficial machine inventions of all time, purely for the speed at which it can carry out such a laborious and time consuming process.

2. Latex gloves - developed after the liquid used for sterilising hands, carbolic acid, started to react to the hands of some nurses, the first pair of Latex gloves that were disposable were developed in 1964 by Melbourne based company Ansell.

3. Tim Tams - one of Australia's highest selling pieces of confectionery (Arnott's, the company that create Tim Tams, reportedly sell 35 million packs of these biscuits on an annual basis), they are slowly working their way to the UK, much to the delight of many people wanting to try out a Tim Tam Slam (the process of biting off both ends of the biscuit and sucking up a drink through it).

4. Electric drill - invented in 1889 by Arthur Arnott (a Scottish electrical engineer who carried out Australia immigration earlier in the same year), the electric drill has gone on to be one of the most varied and useful building tools available.

5. Notepad - just after the turn of the twentieth century, a stationer in Launceston created the notepad after trying to think of a way that several sheets of loose paper could be sold together. Backed with cardboard and glued at the top, this small development by J.A. Birchall changed the way paper was both bought and used after 500 years.

6. Tank - possibly one of the most useful pieces of military based machinery to have ever been created, a design for a basic tank was put to the British War Office in 1912 but was rejected several times. After much persistence, the designs were eventually accepted and Australian Lance de Mole is now seen as the inventor of the very first tank, the Mark I tank.

7. Wine box - seeing a growth in popularity in recent years, boxed wine has been available since 1965, when Thomas Angove created a way for wine to be stored and used without air entering the main compartment.

8. Dual flush toilet - according to Australian Biotechnology, the dual flush toilet system saves 32,000 litres of water a year and was first developed in 1980 by Bruce Thompson.

9. Fridge - the one thing that almost everyone uses on a daily basis, the fridge (an effective ice dispensing model) was developed over a century and a half ago in 1856 by James Harrison.

10. Black box - created by Dr David Warren in 1958, a black box (also known as a flight recorder) is a piece of equipment used in most aircraft to record all data and voice transmissions, with the prime purposes of being able to help determine the reason behind an incident.
