If My Delivery Is Lost Or Damaged, Is It Insured?

Many people fear that when they ship with a courier company, that their precious cargo is going to get delivered to the wrong address, or damaged in some fashion. In the real world, these events take place only very rarely, and most shipments arrive safely at their destination. Any Chicago courier can tell you about the exceptions that exist to this rule though. Every courier has experienced the rare flukes which can cause a financial loss for their customers, which is why all couriers carry a great deal of insurance.

The insurance that a courier company carries is usually known simply as courier insurance. It is going to insure packages against almost every event which might take place that could cause a loss. Damage is certainly covered, in almost all its forms.

The more common forms of damage that a courier package might experience are those which are caused by the couriers themselves. Sometimes a really heavy package can get stacked on top of something breakable, or a package can get dropped or slammed in a door. Any damage caused by courier negligence is going to be insured against. So will damage caused by the weather, such as when it rains when a courier is trying to make a delivery, by fire, by smoke, and by vandalism. Damage to packages which is created as a result of a traffic accident is also insured against.

There are also many ways that packages could, theoretically at least, become lost while being delivered. These include being lost in a warehouse, transferred to the wrong vehicle, or delivered to the wrong address. Packages are also occasionally stolen. Courier insurance will in most cases cover all of these incidences as well.

Sometimes, theft at a company is perpetrated or enabled by one of the employees. Although theft by employee is low in the courier industry, because an employee is in possession without supervision of client goods constantly, the possibility is certainly there. This is why courier companies bond their employees. This means that there is additional insurance against this particular brand of theft.

Essentially, almost anything that might happen to your courier package will be covered. Usually, it will be covered up to the real value of your package, unless you're shipping very expensive things. In that case, sometimes you may need to take out added insurance, as the maximum payable amounts may not cover the real value of your property.
