Hair coloring is a process in which the color of hair is changed with the help of chemicals and different treatments. There can be different purposes behind hair coloring for example to cover the grey hair or to look more stylish or fashionable. Older people usually color their gray hair because gray hair are the sign of older age but youngsters mostly color their hair for the sake of fashion. Sometimes the hair are discolored so people want to restore the original color of the hair. The history of hair coloring reveals that Romans created many recipes of hair coloring and the first synthetic hair dye was created in 1907.

There are different types of hair colors categorized on the basis of the time period the color persists on the hair. Four common types of hair colors are temporary hair colors, semi-permanent hair colors, permanent hair colors and demi-permanent hair colors. Temporary hair color is that which is used on different parties and occasions to color the hair for a short duration of time. Temporary color is available in different forms like shampoos, sprays and gels. It does not penetrate the cuticle and lasts for 6 hours or more. It can be removed easily by washing the hair.

Semi-permanent hair color is one that can penetrate the cuticle so it lasts after washing the hair. The color of each strand is different in case of using semi-permanent color so there is variation in the shades of hair colors. The color of gray hair does not match the rest of the hair with application of semi-permanent color. Demi-permanent hair colors are effective to color gray hair and these are permanent colors. These are darker colors so can persist longer. The demi-permanent color looks natural and it is easy to change the color as compared to permanent colors. Permanent hair color remains same after washing many times but it is possible that the color might fade out with the passage of time. To change the color of hair to natural color bleaches or color removers are used but they can be damaging for hair. There are many side effects of hair coloring like skin irritation, allergies, skin discoloration and hair breakage etc.
