subject: Fireproof Gun Safe - 3 Things You Must Think About Before Buying [print this page]

Finding a fireproof gun safe is very important. Many people don't think too much about this when buying, but it's very important.

A lot of folks spend a lot of time choosing the model with the thickest steel and the best locking system (rightfully so). However, you also need to factor in the fire ratings. If it can't withstand a blaze, it's next to useless.

How do fire ratings work?

They are usually expressed in the minutes or hours that it can withstand a particular temperature for.

Let's say a company claims it can go for 60 minutes at 1300 degrees. That simply means the model can withstand that long without the interior temperature rising above 350 degrees.

If it gets warmer than this, the guns will get too damaged, as well as the ammunition. So now that you know how it works, how do you find the best one? Here are 3 things you MUST think about:

#1) "UL rated"

This just lets you know that the 3rd party tested it and verified it meets the company's claims. Translated--you can be more confident in the results.

But fire ratings is just ONE aspect to think about. There are 2 other variables you must factor in:

#2) Theft protection

Regardless of how fireproof a safe is, it still must be able to keep burglars out. How do you tell how "theft resistant" a model is?

First look at steel thickness. The thicker the steel, the less likely the burglar will break through.

Also, finding one that would attach to the floor or wall is smart. This means the robber can't just pick it up and carry it with them.

#3) Locking system

This is important because it adds another degree of security.

Avoid the lock and key systems.

This is fine and dandy if you don't need to get to your guns in a hurry. But what if somebody has just broken into the house and you have SECONDS to react?

Unless you have the key with you, you probably won't get to the guns fast enough. In this instance, a digital system is better.

What's a digital system?

It's where you either enter a predetermined code, or wave your hand in front of it. Some safes are password protected, whereas others are built to recognize your hand print. Either way, it's MUCH FASTER than lock and key.

The bottom line-getting the right model is relatively easy. Just read the fire ratings of any model you are considering and compare them with each other.

Once you've narrowed it down to a few quality models, than look at the other 2 variables mentioned. This will ensure you get the best fireproof gun safe.
