Getting Affordable Auto Insurance If You Already Have Health Insurance

If you have auto insurance perhaps you did not know many plans work with services that also cover any injuries as a result of a car accident. However, if you have current health coverage this is not always needed. In regards to getting cheaper auto rates this is something to consider if you have an existing health plan.

Personal injury protection works in similar ways that is handled the same way as your health insurance. PIP works in that all hospital bills and other charges that come from you being injured in a car accident will be covered under your current plan. In other words you will not have to pay anything your coverage can handle. In short it is basically the same as what you would have with your health provider.

If you have health insurance that covers you in the event of an accident you should avoid using a separate PIP plan so you can save on your monthly expenses. This is especially helpful in that adding PIP coverage to your auto insurance can be something worth more than a hundred dollars a year to get added to your policy.

Of course it should be noted that in some states personal injury protection will be required. Let me give you an example. In Florida a driver must have at least $10,000 in PIP coverage. Fifteen other states also require the same coverage including Hawaii, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania. Therefore if you are going to be getting auto insurance in a state that requires this coverage, and you have health insurance you should stick with the PIP minimum as a means of saving on your costs.

In addition to these facts it may also be wise to be aware of how some auto insurance providers will also offer health coverage. If you have a health policy with one provider, and then get auto insurance with the same company it's a good possibility you will see a discount for having multiple policies with one provider. The discounts will vary according to each one though.

Be sure to take a look at these things when you are considering updating or getting new auto insurance. You can get cheaper auto rates if you already have health insurance by skipping a PIP plan or going with it's minimum amount required. Getting a policy from the same people that gave you a health policy will help save as well.
