subject: Are Being In Debt And Weight Gain Related? [print this page]

This question is being asked more often than ever before and with good reason. And this is because the answer is yes. Many experts will tell you that it is difficult to lose weight while your debt is overwhelming. So, if you have debt and you have gained weight what is the solution to this situation? There is no cut and dried answer to this question, but there are things you can do to get started eliminating your debt and living a healthy life.

As far as the weight goes, you may not be able to focus 100% on this problem until you have your debt under control. But it does not have to get worse in the mean time. Become aware. Eat only when you are hungry and keep in mind that eating because you have problems and are under stress will only add to your problems and stress in the end. Even if you are not actively working on losing weight, you should try to avoid gaining any more weight.

Having had debt and been overweight, I would focus on eliminating the debt first. When you have debt it is difficult to see past it and focus on much of anything else. I would recommend following the steps in Dave Ramsey's Book, "The Total Money Makeover." Many people have followed his plan and paid of large amounts of debt in what seems like a short amount of time.

His plan is not for the faint of heart. His budget is strict and does not allow for eating out and other things that are not necessary, but you will get out of debt. If you have trouble sticking to his plan, do not give up. Credit counseling may be a better option for you. This is setup through a nonprofit organization that allows you to consolidate your unsecured debts. You will make only one payment each month and you should be out of debt in five years or less. The important thing is to change destructive spending habits.

Even if bankruptcy is your only option, the sooner you put a plan in place to eliminate your debt the sooner you can begin to deal with other issues in your life, such as; your health. Debt can be debilitating and it does put limits on your life.
