subject: Diets That Work Fast: Why Low-carbohydrate Diets Dont Last [print this page]

One of the trendiest diets that work fast is anything that espouses a low-carbohydrate lifestyle, such as Atkins, South Beach, or several other well-known programs. These programs promise rapid weight loss if you significantly reduce the amount of simple and complex carbohydrates you consume.

These diets do work very well in the short term, leading dieters to believe they can lose a huge amount of weight in a very short amount of time.

However, the weight always comes back, and dieters lose faith, blaming themselves for the diets lack of lasting success. But there are three crucial reasons why low-carbohydrate diets dont work well in the long run:

Lack of Fiber Slows Weight Loss

When you significantly reduce or completely eliminate complex carbohydrates from your diet, you also significantly cut the amount of fiber you consume. Fiber is essential for dieters because it helps you feel fuller and satiated after a meal.

Fiber is also necessary for proper elimination, keeping dieters from constipation. Complex carbohydrates provide essential fiber, allowing you to maintain digestive health as well as eliminate wastes from your system.

Without complex carbohydrates in your diet, dieters must take a fiber supplement, such as Metamucil or Benefiber, to maintain the same amount of fiber in their diet that consuming adequate complex carbs will provide.

A Balanced Diet is Necessary for Lasting Success

Eliminating one or more basic food groups from your diet is not recommended, because your body needs a balanced diet to function properly. Your body needs adequate amounts of protein, fats, complex carbohydrates, fiber, and vitamins and minerals in order to perform well even as you lose weight.

In addition, learning to eat a balanced diet in moderation, watching your portions, is a crucial habit you need to learn to continue living in the real world once you reach your goal weight. Otherwise, you could find your weight creeping back as soon as you begin incorporating carbohydrates back into your eating program.

Weight Lost Is Often Water Weight

Most low-carbohydrate diets begin with a detox or induction period, usually lasting two weeks, but it can last much longer depending on the diet. Many dieters report rapid weight loss during this time period, but its important to keep this weight loss in perspective.

If you have gone from eating junk food, drinking sodas, and never exercising to a weight loss regimen that eliminates junk foods, has you drinking more than enough filtered water, and exercising regularly, you will lose weight rapidly.

Most of the weight you lose during this period will be water weight, or weight that your body has created through water retention as a result of your bad habits. Eliminating these bad habits will eliminate this water weight, but it can creep back if you begin indulging again.

The only way you can lose weight and keep it off is by incorporating healthy lifestyle changes slowly over time. It may take longer than the weight loss promised by low-carb diets, but the weight wont creep back. Unlike diets that work fast, with a healthy lifestyle, every pound lost is a pound gone forever.
