Costa Rica Fishing Trip

Clients Sean Keating and Mike Damicci had the fishing trip they want everyone to know about. The signed up for one of Tico Travel's "secret honey hole" charters where clients promise not to disclose the location nor access a GPS.Tico Arrangement has a special arrangement with Drake's Bay most comfortable (and newest) air conditioned rental home that is one of the few actual beach front houses in Costa Rica.

"All I can say is the house had million dollar views of the bay with Scarlet Macaws roosting right in front of the veranda every day" says angler Sean Keating. The clients wanted to have fresh fish to cook in the fully equiped kitchen and also to take large fish from a small boat, whcih has quickly become a popular technique in sportfishing circles.

"We went out to a small reef and caught sardines for bait and when we had enough we took a few more minutes to fish for something to eat later on" recounted Keating.

"It took us 5 minutes to get two snapper and a beautiful 5-10 pound grouper, we put them in the ice box and took off, after all that is all we could eat between us and the crew!"

The anglers next headed out just ouside the Isla Cano National Park to one of the captains from Rancho Corcovado Lodge for some larger fish. After a few minutes they were able to land a few small bonita but nothing else.

Captain Osvaldo quickly rigged up a rod for the bonita and started a slow troll over some sharp under water drops when before they knew what was happening the line came tight a small marlin leaped just yards from the 13 foot boat.

"We were drenched from the water when the fish went back in the water" says Keating.

With a stiff rod and the fish pulling the small boat across the bay the anglers were quickly able to bring the giant alongside the boat.

"we had the marlin in so fast we never got a chance to get the camera out of the bag and Captain Osvaldo thought it was too dangerous to try to keep himtoo close too long or risk that the stress on the fish could kill it so we released it, even getting the circle hook oout with a special tool. It was a true "Old Man and the Sea" moment."

All I can say is we stayed in the most beautiful house, caught the most majestic fish I have evr seen and had the best fish dinner you could ever ask for. We had cell service at the hoouse and called our agent, Laura at Tico Travel we are coming back for sure next year but if we have even half the trip we had it would be worth every penny!
