Get A Skimboard And Join In The Beach Action

The beach sport of skimboarding began way back in the 1920s in California, USA, when lifeguards crafted boards from pieces of wood. Today, the sport is enjoying a big come-back and is one of the fastest growing recreational activities in many parts of the world. The modern skimboard is made of fiberglass, wood or plastic.

The sport is similar to surfing but, as mentioned, it is done in the flat waters of the shoreline. To skimboard, hold the board and run. Then drop the board in front of you, jump onto it and skim over the water. Like surfing, you can then ride the wave back to shore.

Like rollerblading and skateboarding, skimboarding also comprises a number of tricks called 'flat-landing'. The sport has its own lingo and some of the moves have quirky names such as shuv-its or ollies. Because the boards are a lot smaller than surfboards, they are great for performing tricks.

Before buying a board, there are some factors to keep in mind. If you haven't tried this sport before, visit a specialist water sports store because you need to get the right-sized board. The store assistant can help you choose a board to suit your ability, size and weight.

Test the board by placing it on the floor. The center should be flat but the tail and nose must be raised slightly. If you are looking for a fast ride, go for a plastic or fiberglass board. But, if you want a board that's durable and strong, wood is the better choice.

If you want to get serious about the sport and become a skilled trickster and rider, you will require two boards. You need a large skimboard for wave-riding, and a light, rounder, small one for flatlanding. But, if you just want to be a recreational skimboarder, a medium board is ideal because it will enable you to do a bit of both.
