subject: Acid Reflux - Baby Reflux Wedge [print this page]

Infants that suffer from acid reflux may frequently suffer the pain of heartburn. The way in which a baby is laid down can trigger this. Mothers and father need to think about how they put their babies to sleep. A baby reflux wedge can help.

Once your baby is laid down and no longer has gravity working on his or her side to keep liquids in the stomach, the milk will likely start flowing upwards. This will result in acid and heartburn. You might even be able to hear the liquid as it flows the wrong direction. If you do not hear your baby's painful screams at this point, you might hear a sad little whimper.

Each reflux baby will be affected differently. Some suffer severely, while others suffer mildly. Regardless of how your baby suffers, you will want to reduce the pain. A baby reflux wedge works wonders for this.

If you choose not to use a baby reflux wedge, you will have to take steps to ensure that your baby is propped at an angle throughout the day and night. You can prop one end of your baby's cot at an angle of at least 30%. When your baby is still little and doesn't wriggle around much in his or her sleep, the head can be propped even further. You want to raise your baby;s head as high above the tummy as possible.

Regardless of how the cot is propped, it has to be safe. You can also find special tools to raise cot legs and sheets to stop the baby rolling. One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways of achieving this is to use a baby reflux wedge. The wedge has been designed especially for this, so it is safe.

Keep in mind, your baby will be more prone to acid reflux when he or she is laid flat on the back. Rather than placing your infant on his or her back, think about putting the baby on his side. Some infants cannot go to sleep on their sides. If your baby is unable to sleep through the night on his or her side, you will have no other option but to place your baby on its back. If this is the case, you will have to elevate your baby's head. Otherwise, nobody will get a good nights rest.

When you do make use of a baby reflux wedge, you will have to consider your baby's age and the size of the cot. Once your baby is able to move around in his or her sleep, using a shorter and narrower cot will reduce the chance that your baby will move off of the wedge.

With some patience and experimentation, you will find the best way to use a baby reflux wedge to prop your baby's head up while he or she is sleeping. Not only will this help your baby's sleep, but it will help everyone in the house sleep.
