subject: Tankless Water Heaters-what To Know Before Purchasing [print this page]

Tankless water heaters are the latest innovation for domestic hot water generation. The principle is simple; make water hot when you need it, on demand. The demand occurs when someone opens the hot water faucet on a plumbing fixture and expects to feel hot water coming out of the faucet. As the water flows through the tankless heater, it is heated and the user gets exactly what was asked for, namely, hot water. No storage of hot water, no waiting for hot water to run through the piping to the faucet and no waste of water and energy. Sounds like a tankless water heater is the best thing to ever happen doesn't it?

So why hasn't everyone installed a tankless water heater? Well, the truth is that there are several hidden costs that don't seem to be discussed openly until you know the right questions to ask. Yes, you can go to the big-box hardware stores and talk with the sales associate (although I am not sure how that will help you) or talk to your plumber about these systems, but what they fail to tell you is the hidden costs. Costs that are not discussed, or worse, costs that are totally unknown.

Generating hot water instantly takes a lot of energy, but is much better than storing it in a tank until it is needed. Storing hot water in a tank wastes energy and water. Instantly generating hot water at the point-of-use seems to be a more intelligent method. Visit the many on-line sites about tankless water heaters and check it out. There are many to choose from and most sites are trying to sell you one. But what if you don't read all the fine print and information related to the actual installation? What if you decide to purchase and then get a price to install it? Maybe you are good with tools and can run new gas piping or a large electrical circuit to your new tankless water heater. Maybe your plumber knows how to properly size one for you.

If you want to be prepared, you need to be armed with information. Maybe your water heater has not died yet but you want to be prepared for the day it does die. Knowing how to CORRECTLY size and select a tankless water heater and the methods of proper installation are critical. Most home owners and even some plumbers don't have this information.
