subject: How To Manage Your Diet [print this page] 1. Monitor the amount of calories you consume. It is helpful to have an idea of how many calories a food has, and it is especially helpful if there is a label on it.
2. Remind yourself to burn off any extra calories you may have consumed over the course of the week. If you remember that you have consumed more calories than you should have, make sure you burn off those calories before the end of the week. If you delay burning off those calories, you could develop a bad habit of accumulating extra consumed calories and delay your weight loss.
3. Try to avoid eating fried foods. Fried foods are usually fried in oil or fat, so if you eat less fried foods, you will be cutting down the amount of fat in your diet immediately. Remember, just because the oil has been drained off the food doesn't mean there is less fat - most of the times the food has absorbed some oil while frying.
4. Do not skip meals. The worst thing you can do while watching you diet is skip a meal. It has just the opposite effect of what you want. You need to have at least four regular meals every day.
5. Eat fresh vegetables if possible rather than cooked or canned vegetables. When vegetables are cooked, nearly half the vitamins in them are taken away. Canned vegetables are also processed, removing nutrients as well. Vegetables contain the most nutrients when they are eaten raw, so try to do so as often as possible. Also, when you buy your vegetables it is wise to check if the label says that it is pesticide-free, so that you are not eating any chemicals either.
6. Eat no more than one egg per day. Eggs (particularly the yolks) contain quite a bit of cholesterol and fat, so if you really love eggs, eat them 3 times a week at most, while consuming no more than two eggs per day.
7. Keep chocolate as a luxury, and not an everyday snack. Chocolate should not be part of your diet, so take care not to indulge in them. Even bitter chocolate, while it has less sugar, still has cream and possibly oils in it to keep its smooth consistency.
8. Eat foods from all 5 food groups every day. This is a great way to have a variety of foods in your diet to prevent you from getting bored of eating the same things, and ward off any nutritional deficiencies.
9. If you can say no to alcoholic beverages please do. Alcoholic beverages too are not good for you. Beer can be fattening and the rest of the alcoholic drinks may not be fattening by themselves but after a couple of swigs you will be in no position to watch your diet and your appetite too will be something to battle with.
10. Eat your breakfast within one hour of when you wake up. Don't wait until you are hungry, as breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Your body will need lots of energy throughout the day, but this doesn't mean breakfast needs to be the most filling meal of the day.
