The trailer for The Tourist,' a remake of the French thriller of the same name, is out. Johnny Depp plays an American tourist who goes to Italy to mend a broken heart and ends up getting dragged into a web of crime and intrigue by a beautiful stranger (Angelina Jolie).

When we first meet anti-hero Moss, he's chained to a girder on an oilrig. Make no mistake, Moss is a bad guy in some real deep sh--. From that terse introduction, we spend much of Brian Wood's The Tourist seeing the softer side of Moss. Posing as a harmless American tourist in a small European coastal town, Moss soon finds himself in the arms of a local woman. From there things get messy, as Moss, a drug-runner, forms an emotional attachment to a woman who has essentially become his cover story.
Brian Wood shows us the good in Moss for much of The Tourist. Moss' illegal indiscretions are dealt with matter-of-factly. His darker motives are never given the proper weight. Moss is a bad guy. At least, he is doing bad things, but Wood makes him a hero for too much of the story. We see scant details on Moss' past or enough of the darkness that would seem inherent in someone who chose to smuggle drugs.
Moss' greatest offense in The Tourist is his treatment of Julie, his pseudo-girlfriend. Wood does a nice job of dancing around Moss' true intentions. Is he just using this woman to avoid suspicion or does he genuinely enjoy her company? It's not clear until the end exactly how Moss feels and that's just enough to keep the reader on edge throughout this brisk read.
