subject: Calgary Culture: First Thursdays Cultural Crawl by:Jonathan Meier [print this page] Well, it's the first Thursday of the month (also April Fool's day, as my roommate will soon learn... Mwah Hah hah hah HAAAAH) and that means that it's time for another Cultural Crawl through downtown Calgary's cultural district. Calgary Culture is administrating these cultural crawls in a bid to draw attention to the burgeoning arts scene in downtown Calgary.
Cultural crawls are always fun, but there's no way to see everything, there's just far too many events going on. The recommended method is to pick a handful of events that make up a route to follow throughout the day. The event list is a hefty one, and there are events happening all over downtown from 9am all the way through to 9pm. Since I've only got the afternoon free to crawl around in, I myself have a pretty short route list.
First off, I'm going to check out the National Portrait Competition at The Art Gallery of Calgary. I've been meaning to check out The Kingston Prize contest for a while, and today the admission is free between 4 and 9pm.If you're unfamiliar with the contest, it's a competition to determine the best portrait of a Canadian by a Canadian artist.
Then, I'm off to check out the Preview of the Calgary Underground Film Festival at the Calgary Arts Development screening room at Art Central. The seventh annual CUFF festival is coming up soon, and I'm curious to see what it'll be like this year.
Afterwards, I'll head over to the DeVille Luxury Coffe and Pastry shop in Fashion Central to take advantage of their 1st Thursday Happy Hour specials on wine, cheese and beer. While you could argue that that isn't a very healthy dinner, it should give me more than enough energy for the concert at The Palomino.
They've got a furious blast of Folk-Rock coming in the form of Wax Mannequin, The Burning Hell, and Prairie Cat. Afterwards, I'll likely be ready for bed.
It was a tough trick trying to come up with a short list of events to check out today. The list of events, venues, and specials is as long as my arm. And that's saying something, I have long arms.
