When Our Children Go Away

Even if it is considered a normal step in our childrens life to leave the nest at some point, we are usually not ready when that time comes.

Especially if they are young and decide to leave to another country, it is difficult to adjust to the idea of that unexpected independence. For the parents there is concern, and pain for the children the excitement for the fore coming freedom, comes with anxiety and insecurity, because they want to feel free and show to the world that they can do it by themselves, but they are also scared.

Also, with older children, already professionals, and looking to expand their horizons, maybe with their newly established families, our feeling is different, but equally painful, with other factors in play. We worry about how frequently we would be able see or even speak to them again. Even more so, if they already have children: how are we going to maintain the closeness and sweetness that grandparents and grandchildren deserve? We want to be there for the crucial and special moments, but also for the daily and normal stuff that is so important.

Whatever the case might be, frequency plays a key factor in communication; It is not always possible to be physically present, but..we want to maintain the contact fresh, so they know we are always there for them.
When Our Children Go Away

For that reason communication faces today several challenges: it must be agile, mobile, affordable and in two ways. We want our students to know that we are there for them always, within a phone call reach, and equally, we want be included and to feel present on our older children and grandchildrens lives.

Luckily today there are options. Some of them free but a little high tech for grandparents, like SKYPE, where you have to have a computer or an advanced phone with Skype capabilities; but there are also other, that are affordable, and very friendly like El Telfono Rojo, that even incorporates Skype if you want. Both parties can make and receive calls from a regular phone, or to one of those specialized phones for Skype, if you choose so. What I know is that we dial a LOCAL number, exactly as we do today to call everybody in the family, and our children abroad receive the call, wherever they set it up for.the best of two words.

With more than 7 years in the market, El Telfono Rojo has become one of the best and most reliable options, by offering a modern but simple solution, shortening the distance and relieving the frustration of the forced separation with our children.we might have an ocean separating us from our children, but we feel close again. Itd have been nice for my parents to have El Telfono Rojo, when I left so many years ago.
