Australian Boomerangs

Many people love to purchase boomerangs to take home with them as a reminder of a great holiday. But they may not think about who made the boomerang or how it was done. Sometimes the boomerangs for sale in tourist shops do not actually come from Australia at all, but may be imported from overseas.

It seems a shame to buy a boomerang that is made overseas. When boomerangs are made in Australia they are usually made by indigenous people and decorated with special symbols that have a meaning. Very often you may see symbols on your boomerang that have a story attached often a hunting story or it may be telling about some special legend of the indigenous people.

One of the favourite stories is about the rainbow snake that lived in the dreamtime a time before man inhabited the earth. Such stories have special significance to the person who created the boomerangs. They may have sat under a shady tree in the outback of Australia carving the boomerang out of special timber of the region. Such a boomerang is far nicer to possess than one that was made in a factory by workers who didn't really care about it.

Of course these days the boomerangs made in the outback are not painted with the same kind of materials as they used to be years ago. Then the native people used saliva and animals blood along with coloured clays and finely ground stone to decorate their boomerangs. These days they must use something a little different. However, just because they use purchased colours and paints does not mean that a lot of thought has not gone into the design.

There may be an emu, kangaroo, wallaby, snake or any number of wild animals depicted on it. Other designs depicting nature such as the sun, rivers, hills and trees are drawn in that special way that only indigenous person seem to be able to do so well. So when you purchase a boomerang make sure it is an original.
