Summer Blueberries

Now that the winter has passed and warmer sunnier days are just around the corner. There is no better season than the summer months to find, locally grown and harvested fresh fruit and vegetables. But, August is my favourite month, because locally grown blueberries are plenty full.

Blueberries are classed as a super fruit by many nutritionists and health experts because they are packed full of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants, including Lutein. Lutein is a compound that is found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, and also in blueberries, and has scientifically been identified as an important natural supplement for preventing and sometimes even reversing an eye condition known as "macular degeneration", one of the most common causes of sight impairment or blindness in many elderly people, the blueberry is also said to have powerful weight loss benefits by way of helping to speed up metabolism.

And what a wonderfully tasty way to look after your general health and eye sight! Apart from eating them raw you could try putting them into a saucepan with a little sugar, a touch of cinnamon, and a couple of table spoons of cornstarch, gently stir and heat the whole concoction until you've got a thick rich dark blue syrupy, now pour into a pie crust and bake, for a lovely healthy blueberry pie. Or alternatively you can use your freshly made blueberry syrup to liven up almost any desert including your morning cereal, or to but an extra punch into a fresh green continental style salad

Organic gourmet blueberry syrups and preserves usually retain many of their healthy qualities of freshly picked raw blueberries, so there is no need to be concerned about adding these delights to your daily diet. A tablespoon of natural blueberry preserve spread over a piece of whole grain bread or on some toast can be a very healthy start to your day; a medium portion of gently warmed blueberry syrup poured over a bowl of vanilla ice cream or freshly made pancakes is a lovely healthy treat for all of the family, any time of day.
