subject: Treat Bad Breath With A Balanced Diet [print this page]

There are some health issues that most of us are reluctant to talk about. Medical literature prescribes that nothing is taboo. We humans as well as doctors are equally affected by social mores. This obnoxious issue of bad breath dates back to ancient times. The 1550 BC2 Ebers Papyrus documents the use of aromatic substances such as frankincense and myrrh to assist in overcoming bad breath. So, this syndrome has been in vogue from the earliest human civilizations.

It is difficult to say how many percent of people suffer from halitosis, which is the medical term for bad breath. In fact, most of us at some point of time or another suffer from this socially unacceptable stigma. And, invariably, each one of us wakes up with malodor of the mouth. Also, people who are fasting or those whose mouth is often dry suffer from bad breath. A bad odor from the mouth is equivalent to something that 'Smells Like Rotten Eggs' (compare Hydrogen Sulfide!)

In retrospective, halitosis is caused by eating irregular and unbalanced diet, improper mouth care, a dry mouth, bacteria-laden decaying food particles lodged in-between teeth, formation of tartar and plaque, use of tobacco, consumption of alcohol, gastro-intestinal disorders, unregulated drug use, post-nasal-drip secondary to sinus infection, et cetera. These are only a few of the reasons for bad breath. However, there could be underlying serious health problems that indirectly relate to bad mouth odor.

The religious observation of the following suggestions should help treat bad breath of your mouth in no time at all:

- Hygienic and healthy mouth care with proper mouth-washing

- Proper brushing and flossing of the teeth and gums after each meal

- Scrubbing and cleansing your tongue after each meal

- Keep your oral cavity salivated at all times vis--vis drink plenty of water

- Avoid smoking and the use of tobacco

- Regulate the intake of caffeine, sugar, meat and dairy products, onions, garlic, and alcoholic beverages

- Balance your diet and avoid irregular eating habits

- Visit the dentist at least once every half-yearly and ensure that your teeth are in good repair

- A consult with your physician is suggested in case none of the above-cited solutions are working in your favor. There could, in all probability, lie a chronic pathological condition.

Treating bad breath is imperative. You must at all costs get rid of this offensive condition and become professionally and socially free to mingle.
