subject: Skipping The Lean And Green Meal On Medifast: Can You? Should You? Is This Ever A Good Idea? [print this page] I recently had someone ask me if it was acceptable to skip the lean and green meal when on Medifast. She was single, didn't have a family to cook for, and really enjoyed not having to worry about preparing her own meals. Plus, I think she suspected that if she omitted the lean and green meal, she was saving herself some calories and therefore might actually lose more weight as the result.
This isn't an uncommon question. I'm often asked about the consequences or logistics of not eating the larger "lean and green meal. In the following article, I'll share my take on this.
Although I Don't Think It's Advisable To Skip The Lean And Green Meal, I Also Don't Think It's Not The End Of The World Every Once In A While: It's my opinion and experience that, in the long run, you aren't saving yourself anything or losing more weight if you skip meals. You probably already know that a big part of having success on Medifast is the ability to get into ketosis or fat burning mode. But, your body needs enough food to support your body as this happens. If you consume too few calories, you run the risk of delaying or preventing the ketosis process, which could potentially stall your results rather than enhancing them.
The plan is put together considering the calories in this main meal and there's plenty of room for it. So they don't expect for you (or want you) to cut back anymore. And think of it this way, this is your one opportunity to have some variety and to make sure that you're getting fresh foods.
With that said, it's not like the diet police are going to come and swarm down on you if you have one off day. There are times when you don't have the time or inclination to sit down to this and you may only have access to the Medifast prepackaged meals. Being in this situation every now again doesn't need to derail you. It's my experience that there's quite a bit of wiggle room and leeway in Medifast. So long as you do better the next day and don't let this get you off track, it's my opinion that there's nothing wrong with accepting that these things sometimes happen. Of course, you should address any concerns with your doctor.
The Lean And Green Meal Doesn't Need To Be A Big Production: Finally, many of the people who ask me about skipping this main meal are under the impression that it's a big deal to prepare it. Many tell me they just don't have the time. Nothing says that this meal has to be a home cooked one every single night. It really can be quite easy. You can take a bagged salad and add some ready made protein. You can use a very carefully chosen frozen meal. You can even make some restaurant foods work. (Even fast food items can work if you chose very carefully.)
The point is, you don't need to skip or omit this meal because you think it's inconvenient. And frankly, I don't believe that doing so will make you lose more weight more quickly. I believe there's a reason that it was made part of Medifast by the doctors who developed the diet. And I find it helps if you view it as an opportunity for variety rather than a chore.
