subject: The Man Who Cooked Up A Journey From The West And Discovered Hawaii [print this page] James Cook was a British Explorer, Navigator and Cartographer but more importantly a captain of the Royal Navy. He was born on October 27, 1728 in a small village of Marton in England. His career started when he was very young when first started on a coal transport ship on the Baltic Sea. He joined the Royal Navy and was in action during the Seven Years' War and was a helping hand when he surveyed and mapped the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River whist the siege of Quebec. With this it he gained the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society as it led to a very successful attack on the Plains of Abraham, This got him promoted as a commander of the HM Bark Endeavourer which meant he could go on to explore the seas of the world.
James Cook had explored and charted many areas of the world whilst on his travels he recorded numerous islands and coastlines on European maps. He was immaculate in his duties and skills. He went to on three Pacific voyages each of which he made a few discoveries and had some memorable voyages but it was the third Voyage that was defining for his life. On his third voyage, he sailed into the Waimea Harbour in January 1778 with both of his ships Resolution and Discovery which was commandeered by Captain Charles. Their goal was to determine if there was a passage above North America in the Northwest this made him. He sailed around Africa along the way stopping at Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti on the way north. He sailed past Hawaii and sailed to the Alaskan coast. It was on the way back that he stopped at the Hawaiian Islands as he had to to restock and repair the ships.
He was the first westerner to ever set their on the Hawaiian Islands. He had entered these unknown waters landing at Kealakeua Bay on Jan 17. At this time there was a local religious festival so Hawaiians thought he was a returning God so he was welcomed and treated very well. Obviously this was a time long before the place we know full of Hawaii rentals, hotels and villas but he was still given the best of what they had to offer. For the next year he had explored several Hawaiian Island but it ended in tragedy as he was killed in 1779 on the Big Island, in what can be described as a petty dispute for a row boat. This happened because the Hawaiians realised that he wasn't a God. He was killed on the very same area where he had first arrived.
Being the first man from the western world to grace the land of the Hawaiian Islands he has a statue which is a tribute to all he's done for. The Captain James Cook Statue is located in Hofgaard Park in Waimea, West Kauai. The statue though is a replica of the actual statue that stands in Whitby in England. There is also a Captain Cook Monument that is located on Big Island it reads "In memory of the great circumnavigator, Captain James Cook, R.N., who discovered these islands on the 10th of January, A.D. 1778 and fell near this spot on the 14th of February, A.D. 1779."
