subject: Breast Reduction Techniques [print this page]

Boob reduction surgeries are very common place and they take place for many reasons. There are a few different ways of completing the procedure varying for different reasons. It is important to know the different techniques that can be used in order to be informed when you go in for your consultation.

There are two main types of reduction. The first is called the pedicle method. This is a type of procedure that leaves the blood supply to the nipple and areola intact and usually leaves sensation and milk production abilities intact as well. With this procedure, there are many different incisions that can be made. The most common is to cut around the areola, vertically down from there to the bottom of the breast and then, depending on size, horizontally along the bottom. This enables the surgeon to remove excess fatty tissue and to re-suture the skin in as natural a way as possible.

The second main type of reduction is called the free nipple graft. This is when the nipple and areola are severed while the surgeon reshapes the breast, and then grafted on afterward in a new position. This is mostly for women with extremely large chests and removes all sensation and milk production capabilities, as the blood supply and nerve endings are no longer attached. There are also many different incisions that can be made with this surgery.

As with any procedure, it is important to discuss with your doctor the methods he or she is planning on using. Depending on the size of your breasts, you may be able to get a donut incision (which is just around the areola) or may need different types. You want to go into surgery as informed as possible so that you are not shocked by anything when you see the results. Also, make sure that your doctor is licensed and experienced and can answer any of your questions.

There is another type called a scarless reduction. This is mostly referring to women who are only getting liposuction and there are scars. While the scars are minimal and are not as noticeable as with more traditional methods, the liposuction will leave small scars on the areas the fat is being drawn from. This is often for women who only need a small amount of fatty tissue removed and should only be done by someone who is very experienced.

Overall, regardless of which method you choose, make sure that you are comfortable with your doctor. Once everything is discussed and you are well-informed, you will be on your way to living a more comfortable and proportionate life.
