subject: How To Decide On The Type Of Teeth Whitening Procedure To Suit You [print this page]

There are different factors playing a role in the decision making regarding the type of teeth whitening to acquire.

Commitment

If you decide on a specific tooth whitening procedure, you need to follow the steps closely, listen to authoritative advice and persevere untill you achieve the results you crave for.

Objectives

Right from the onset you need to be clear of what tooth shade can be achieved with your chosen teeth whitening procedure and the reasons behind that. This will give you the right mindset and calculated expectations in working towards your goal. Approaching your objective, of getting whiter teeth scientifically, will lessen the risk of failure.

Duration

The duration of treatment will be determined by your objectives. If you want to have white teeth in 3 days for your wedding photos, then it will be of minimal use to start home remedies or over the counter products and you will be limited to an in-office treatment. The same situation will apply if your circumstances don't allow you to wear trays nightly or you cannot see your way open in visiting your cosmetic dentist three to four times.

Cost

Home remedies may not be effective, but at least are not expensive at all. Over the counter products will cost way lower than in-office bleaching. The costs are totally affected by your commitment, goals and how quickly you want to see results.

Every teeth whitening procedure available nowadays to correct discoloration of the teeth by removing the brown and yellow staining, work effectively, but has advantages and disadvantages. The type of procedures available should be discussed with your cosmetic dentist, to find the most appropriate recommendation for you.

TEETH WHITENING (In-Office)

Using a special light with a whitening gel, this is an in-office bleaching system. It is often followed up with an at-home teeth whitening kit for ultimate results.

The translucent whitening gel is applied to the outside of the teeth and a special activating light is used in activating the crystals, absorbing the energy from the light and penetrating the teeth enamel for an increased lightening effect on the teeth. The duration in the dentist's chair depends on the degree of discoloration you have, but two hours is average.

Advantage: One visit is usually sufficient for a whiter smile. The tooth whitening treatment typically costs 500.

Disadvantage: The sudden acquisition of white is likely to be noticed by those around you immediately.

LASER BLEACHING (In-Office)

Using a laser with a whitening gel, this is an in-office bleaching system.

The translucent bleaching gel is applied to the teeth and a laser light is used to activate the crystals to absorb the energy from the light and penetrate the teeth enamel to increase the lightening effect on the teeth. The length of time in the cosmetic dentist's chair depends on the degree of discoloration you have.

Advantage: One visit is usually all it takes for a bright smile.

Disadvantage: The sudden change of color is likely to be noticed by those around you immediately. This is the more expensive of the procedures available, but also the quickest.

LASER BLEACHING (In-Office)

The only difference is that the dentist is now using a laser with a whitening gel, this is an in-office bleaching system.

The translucent bleaching gel is applied to the teeth and the laser light is used to activate the crystals to absorb the energy from the laser and penetrate the teeth enamel to increase the whitening effect on the teeth. The length of time in the dentist's chair depends on the amount of discoloration you have.

Advantage: One visit is usually all it takes for a dazzling smile.

Disadvantage: Again, the sudden exhibition of brilliant white teeth is likely to be noticed by those around you immediately. This is the more expensive of the teeth whitening procedures available, but also the quickest.

CUSTOM FIT TRAY BLEACHING (In-Home)

A custom designed tray is worn over your teeth for a period of weeks. A small amount of the bleaching gel is placed in the tray and worn for at least 8 hours each day. This is a common procedure that is easy to use and costs less. Impressions are taken of your mouth and a thin custom made plastic tray is made which you take home and wear for minimum one to two hours per day, preferably 8 hours for quick and consistent results.

While some results may be seen in a couple days, it usually takes one to two weeks to see the changes. After two weeks your dentist will compare your teeth to the shade taken at the beginning of the teeth whitening procedure. This procedure is sometimes used in combination with the in-office laser whitening if you have severe discoloration (dark grey or purple) or internal teeth staining.

Advantage: A gradual whitening of your teeth over time will be less noticeable to others that you're undergoing this procedure. The cost is lower than in-office laser whitening.

Disadvantages: This procedure will require two to four visits to the cosmetic dentists office.

STORE-BOUGHT WHITENING STRIPS (In-Home)

A whitening strip is fitted over your upper and lower teeth. You'll wear them for a half hour to one hour once a day depending on the brand. This is the most common technique because it's easy to use and costs less. The strips are comfortable and have no trouble staying in place. Speaking is slightly affected while wearing them.

While some results may be seen in a couple days, it usually takes one week for the faster strips to one month for the slower systems for you to see the full whitening of your teeth. This whitening strip procedure is sometimes used in conjunction with the in-office laser whitening, depending on the severity of severe discoloration (dark grey or purple) or internal teeth staining.

Whitening pens have more or less the same effect, but are definitely more comfortable to use and mainly the celebrities' choice of topping up their teeth whitening after in-office treatment.

Advantage: You set the pace. You can whiten your teeth as fast or slow depending on which system you select. Some whiten in as little as one week. Usually you only wear the strips for thirty minutes at a time. Some even dissolve. The cost is relatively low compared to other techniques. A good solution for "touch-ups" as mentioned.

Disadvantages: This procedure may not be as powerful as other procedures which require visits to the cosmetic dentists office.

IN-MALL WHITENING STORES OR STANDS (In-Store)

This is a newer teeth whitening method, but is basically similar as the in-home kits. A custom fitted tray or strips are worn over your teeth. Though results may be seen right away, it is usually recommended that you return to the treatment center weekly to get the full potential of this system.

Advantage: You will likely see quick results after the first visit. If you are uncomfortable using the at-home whitening kits or strips, this may make you feel more assured.

Disadvantages: This teeth whitening option isn't much different than the at-home strips and custom tray systems and costs more. It also requires regular trips to the treatment center. The whitening materials used are not necessarily up to dental professional standards and may exceed some legal standards.
