Traumatic Brain Injury Can Devastate Lives

In the moment that it takes to have an accident, a life time of problems can result--even from something that may seem minor. According to car accident statistics, over a million Americans have suffered traumatic brain injuries and around 20% of those are from car crashes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), a traumatic brain injury is an injury that is caused by a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain." You might know this already, but traumatic brain injury is one of the more common injuries for soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

There is a distinction between a minor brain injury and a traumatic brain injury. Some less serious injuries resulting from a car crash may only just leave you scraped up but without permanent damage. However, a traumatic brain injury causes permanent brain damage that can require treatment for the rest of the victims life. Traumatic brain injury is often not diagnosed or misdiagnosed because the symptoms may not appear quickly or are thought to be something different. Though it may seem like a minor bump to the head, it might have done damage to your brain forever.

Those who have been in a car accident could have undiagnosed traumatic brain injury. It is possible to suffer brain injury even if an accident is minor because of the intense forces of whiplash. Watch out for symptoms of headache, nausea, confusion, unconsciousness, irritability, eye-sight problems, or changes in personality.

The worst brain injury can cause you to go into coma, to seize, or worse. Anybody who experiences these symptoms must get medical attention as soon as possible because they could be life-threatening and might need surgery.

Another thing we have learned about traumatic brain injuries is that the person injured is never the only victim. Not only do medical expenses add up and can possibly put a family in debt, but victims who suffer a major personality change from a traumatic brain injury may not be the same person that you used to know. If an injury like this was caused by a car accident due to another drivers negligence, the victim may be able to get help to pay medical bills and other compensation for lost wages, suffering, and enjoyment of life. A car accident attorney cant undo an injury, but they can get victims and their familys compensation to prevent added suffering.
