subject: The Best Weight Loss Products Aren't Usually Weight Loss Products at All [print this page]

You may have heard that one pill is one of the best weight loss products around or that cracker or cereal is the best. Many advertisers say they have the key for quick and easy weight loss, but that isn't always true.

There are no easy fixes when it comes to weight loss. Many times there is only discipline, eating healthily, and exercise. The products that claim to offer weight loss may just be doing you more harm than good.

How is this possible? It all has to do with the makeup of those weight loss products and what your body does with them.

Why Most Weight Loss Products Aren't Good for You

In order to be low fat, low calorie, and shelf-stable, health food products have to be laden with chemicals. For example, hydrogenated fats are more stable than butter or some of the other natural fats, so manufacturers usually use that in their products.

And we are all starting to hear how bad those hydrogenated fats are.

It isn't just the hydrogenated fat. Sugar substitutes, artificial colors, preservatives . . . many of the products on the ingredients list that look like they belong in a chemist's briefcase are downright bad for you.

Your body is designed to protect itself. When a toxic substance like the chemicals found in "health" food comes in, the body has to filter them out before they cause damage. That is your liver's job.

Unfortunately, your liver may be so busy filtering that it is not burning fat efficiently. The result? The very "health" foods you're eating may be keeping you fat! Clearly, many of "food supplements" you can get at your local health food store are not exactly the best weight loss products.

The Best Weight Loss Products Are Healthy, Organic Food

Instead of a pill or health food in a box, try organic, healthy food. Different foods eaten in the right combination for your body type can help the fat melt away.

In addition, the good food comes with an extra benefit. Vitamins, minerals, nutrition, antioxidants, Omega 3 fatty acids, good taste, clearer skin . . . all these benefits are yours just by eating the right foods.

For example, the antioxidants found in blueberries, acai berries, and green tea can help to prevent cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. They can also help you look younger.

Among a list of other benefits, Omega 3 fatty acids are proven to help your heart, to help reduce inflammation which can lead to different pains and to high cholesterol, and can help your mood. It can also help you burn fat.

The combination of food you need to burn fat is different depending on your metabolic type. However, fruits and vegetables, meats and raw nuts, whole eggs, avocadoes, and healthy fats are all on the menu. You just need to discover which proportions of each food you should be eating.

Only Use Supplements You Trust

While nutrients from food are often best, supplements can be used when you can't seem to get the right amount of a certain nutrient in your diet. The trick is to buy and use only those supplements you trust.

Often, that means foregoing the big chain brands and sticking to a manufacturer that has special interest in the product. Just as you would see a cardiologist before you go in for heart surgery, stick to a company that specializes in supplements.

It is also important to make sure the supplements are made from a whole food source. If it doesn't specifically say that on the label, go on the internet or call the company to find out. You wouldn't want horrible things like artificial sweeteners sneaking in through your supplements, would you?

The best weight loss products often aren't weight loss products at all. They are usually good food eaten in the right balance for your body type. So sit back, eat up, and enjoy.
