The opponent quickly marched down the field, threatening to erase everything we'd fought back to accomplish. One defensive stop was all we needed, but after the way the game had unfolded, I wasn't confident it would happen.
Then came the biggest moment of the season.
Facing fourth down near midfield, the retro bowl opposing quarterback looked deep down the right sideline. His receiver had a step on my defender, and for a split second I thought the comeback was over.
At the last possible moment, my defensive back reached across the receiver and knocked the ball away.
Incomplete.
Ball game.
Championship secured.
Looking back, it's funny how many decisions felt completely wrong in the moment. The early interception, the ineffective running game, the failed deep shots, and the defensive struggles all suggested the season was about to end in disappointment.
But winning in Retro Bowl isn't always about making perfect decisions.
Sometimes it's about recognizing when your original plan isn't working, adapting without panicking, and continuing to make the next smart choice instead of dwelling on the last mistake.
The box score won't tell the full story.
It will show another championship.
What it won't show is how close every bad decision came to ending the season—and how the willingness to adjust turned a game full of mistakes into the sweetest victory I've ever experienced.
