subject: Investing In Green Technology Funds [print this page]

The last few years there has been increased emphasis by the financial community to invest in green technology funds. If you aren't familiar with green funds, they are a type of investment fund that will only contain companies that in some way work to help the environment. It could be that the company researches alternative forms of energy, or it could be that the company has taken great steps to conserve and save the environment, but there is always an environmental tie in.

Unless you live under a rock you've noticed that almost all corporations have adopted environmentally friendly polices like NBC's commercial push to save energy to Starbucks use of recycled paper to produce their coffee cups. This should be a sign that being environmentally friendly is all the rage and when something is increasing in popularity then it's a great time to invest.

While green investing is extremely popular with consumers as a whole, the ironic part is that investing in green energy and green technology often has returns have been as high, or higher than many more standard investments. This has a lot to do with the emotional aspect of investors who want to invest in a "greater cause", but for the most part companies are finding that becoming more environmentally conscious is good for business both on the public relations front as well as saving costs by conserving energy.

Something also worth noting in recent years is that the federal government has made a special emphasis to invest more government funds in environmentally friendly companies in the hopes to get the country less reliant on foreign sources of energy like oil. There are thousands of research companies working on various technologies like wind, solar, hydrogen, and nuclear power that will provide power for everything from factories to kitchen appliances and the government has done everything they can to help promote its growth.

Environmentally friendly technology is really in its infancy, so investing in green funds today is getting in on the ground floor. Just like hybrid cars are becoming more and more prevalent, companies are adopting more and more environmentally friendly policies and are investing in technology to help them save money in the long run. The more investments these companies make, and the more the price of energy and gas increases, the more we will see companies place a greater emphasis on green technology. This can only mean increased sales for green companies and higher returns for investors.
