subject: Combat Stress By Taking The Appropriate Kind Of Diet [print this page]

Eat a diet rich in healthy foods as a novel strategy to combat stress. Many foods contain the nutrition our stressed-out bodies need to rejuvenate. Of course, we should have many tactics for relieving the chronic stress of everyday life, but without good nutrition it will be more difficult to win against it.

Foods rich in magnesium, like spinach and cashews are natural stress relievers because magnesium calms the nervous system. Studies show that vitamin C aids immunity and reduces stress. Foods like oranges and berries are high in vitamin C. Almonds feed our immune systems too and provide vitamins B and E for a boost of energy.

High fiber foods create a feeling of fullness and curb the craving for junk food when stress takes hold. Sweet potatoes are perfect for this and they contain beta carotene, a well-known antioxidant.

The sweet potato knocks out the sugar craving because it is sweet, but it is balanced by lasting complex carbohydrates. Along with their fiber, they balance the blood sugar and thus calm stress even further.

Dried apricots are a sweet treat also high in fiber and magnesium which calms the muscle tension that stress brings.

Eating turkey can also bring stress relief because it contains high amounts of L-tryptophan which is relaxing. L-tryptophan is an important nutrient because it maintains the stability of the nervous system.

The reason L-tryptophan is relaxing is because the brain uses it to make serotonin, a calming neurotransmitter which also brightens the mood and reduces anxiety. Turkey can do us significant benefit in terms of stress.

Salmon is another good food for the health of the brain because it contains omega-3 fatty acids which are involved in reducing surges of stress hormones, particularly cortisol. Diets high in omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to reduce stress and promote cognition.

Speaking of keeping the brain healthy, I must mention walnuts and also avocados. They contain healthy fats for the nervous system as well. You see, there are many foods that help with stress. If we eat good food, we will feel good too. If we feel good, we reduce stress.
