subject: Dieting Causes Weight Gain. [print this page] The realization that you need to lose weight usually leads to yet another round of dieting. The real problem is that in a lot of cases dieting causes weight gain.
This is especially the case if the incorrect type of diet plan is used. With the ultimate target being to drop weight rather than gain it how do we go about adopting the correct diet program to follow?
Lets first look at why dieting causes weight gain, when you go on a diet you are in affect restricitng your body the amount of food it is used to getting on a daily basis. This is the only way that you can help your body to reduce weight.
Our bodies have a natural and overriding sense of survival. So what happens is that when you come off your program or stop it your body instantly creates the need to consume more food.
What your body is doing is it is saying to its self I had better store more fat just in case we are starved again in the future. This is why in a lot of cases people who follow diets tend to put on more weight than they originally had before they dieted.
Also where as in the past we may have thought that being 50lbs overweight is the time I need to go on a diet, the next time you will probably push that limit to maybe 55lbs. You then commence another diet, and then come off it. Your body then over consumes to store more fat and next time you do not begin a diet until you are 60lbs.
Anyone that has battled with their weight will recognise this problem, this is what is known as yoyo dieting. So how do we prevent this from happening? The easiest way is to start a diet plan which includes,
A natural healthy eating program.
Diet re-education
Regular exercise
A weight loss maintenance Plan
A natural healthy eating program is essential as it ensures that your body gets the correct food and vitamins it needs to be healthy. By getting the food intake right will also help to increase your metabolism and also help with losing weight. We all know that we have to eat plenty of natural foods such as fruit and vegetables, and that we need to reduce fatty foods and those high in sugars.
This is where diet re-education comes into play. By re-educating yourself and your body that healthy eating is good for you, and that you can create filling and delicious meals from natural ingredients will help you to maintain any weight loss you achieve. Also some foods when consumed together or eaten at the same time may help to increase your metabolism which means your body will burn more calories even when in a resting state than it did before.
Regular exercise is key to losing and maintaining any weight loss. Exercise will increase your metabolic rate and will help stop your body from storing any excess fat you eat. As an added bonus you will be and feel so much fitter. If you follow these points and follow a diet program that includes a weight loss maintenance plan you will end that yoyo dieting of the past.
A good weight loss program must include advice on how to maintain your weight loss, if it does not include it as part of the program you will be wasting your time. Do not get me wrong though, you will possibly lose weight to start with, but once you stop using the program that weight will surely climb back on and you will realise that the diets cause weight gain in the long term.
