subject: Common Side Effects Associated With Plastic Surgery [print this page]

Although cosmetic surgery is capable of significantly improving a person's appearance and self-esteem, it is considered serious because it is surgery and patients will have to endure some type of recovery period. Most patients take at least a week off of work, school, and other obligations following their scheduled surgery date. This allows patients some time to rest, and time for side effects to subside. Many patients feel uncomfortable while they are recovering from plastic surgery and want to be able to rest and take it easy for a week or two after treatment. The most common side effects that develop in patients that have undergone plastic surgery include:

Pain

Most patients experience some pain in the treatment area and incision site in the days following surgery. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication, which should be taken as directed, to minimize the pain.

Swelling

In addition to pain, most men and women develop some swelling at the site of treatment area. Patients can apply ice packs to reduce swelling, but in most cases patients will need to wait a couple of weeks for the swelling to go down.

Bruising

Most plastic surgery patients develop bruising in the treatment area due to the trauma that took place when surgery was performed. The extent of bruising depends on the type of procedure that was performed. Bruising tends to be the worst in patients that have undergone rhinoplasty or liposuction surgery.

Redness

Certain cosmetic surgery and non-surgical procedures cause some redness in the treatment area. Procedures that are most likely to cause redness include laser skin resurfacing and chemical peels. All surgical procedures are also associated with some redness at the site of the incision. If the redness gets worse in the days following surgery, consult your surgeon because this could be a sign of an infection.
