subject: Elements of an Effective Diet for Hypothyroidism [print this page] The jury is still out on this one, but some medical experts hold that there is no effective diet for hypothyroidism. This, of course, will come as surprise to the thousands who have websites out there hawking hypothyroidism diets. It's confusing and, in fact, following bad diet advice when you're suffering low thyroid function can be downright dangerous.
Hypothyroidism is a condition that develops when one has an under active thyroid. This endocrine gland is responsible for regulating the body's metabolic rate (among other things), and when it slows down, so does the body's ability to properly process the food you eat. In fact, low thyroid hormone levels negatively affect nearly every single bodily system.
One of the main symptoms of low thyroid output is weight gain and the inability to successfully lose body mass. Add to this that most sufferers of an abnormally low thyroid level will often feel fatigued, both physically and mentally. This makes participation in a regular exercise program difficult for them to consider. As you may know, diet without exercise is not generally successful in achieving weight loss, especially long-term results.
An effective diet for hypothyroidism will have the same ingredients as an effective diet for anyone else, with a few caveats. Certain vitamins and minerals are known to increase thyroid function while some have the opposite effect. If you have been diagnosed with low thyroid levels it probably means you've already been to see a doctor and been given the thyroid tests. That's good. Many sufferers of the disease aren't even aware they have it, since they've never completed hormone testing.
If your doctor has diagnosed you with a low thyroid condition, he or she will probably put you on synthetic hormone replacement treatment. It's important to realize that certain foods, medications and supplements can affect your body's ability to properly absorb these synthetic hormones. Use of the following should be avoided or at least not consumed within several hours of taking your hormone replacement meds:
Some ulcer medications such as sucralfate
Some drugs for lowering cholesterol such as colestipol and cholestyramine
Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum
Calcium and iron supplements or multi-vitamins containing iron
These can all cause negative interactions and should be used prudently or avoided altogether. Consuming too much dietary fiber can also cause problems.
A diet for hypothyroidism should include plenty of water, fresh fruits and vegetables and be low in fat. Avoid surgery and fatty snacks and knock out the consumption of soda pop. Try to exercise, even if it means breaking your routine up into smaller sessions throughout the day. Your aim should be to FEEL GOOD, and you can.
