subject: Adopting A Vegetarian Diet Has Many Benefits [print this page]

For starters, a vegetarian diet has been shown in several studies to reduce the risk of several illnesses and deadly diseases such as high blood cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease. Specifically, regarding high cholesterol by eliminating any food that comes from animals, which contain high amounts of cholesterol, you will automatically lower your cholesterol and you will see your blood pressure decrease as well. This is a noteworthy benefit considering that as reported by the American Heart Association, 102.2 Americans are borderline or have high blood cholesterol. Regarding heart disease, several studies have shown that eliminating dairy products and meat which contain large amounts of saturated fats, while eating nuts and whole grains will improve cardiovascular health.

Another noteworthy benefit of a vegetarian diet is improved digestion and weight loss. Because a plant-based diet is fiber-rich, it improves the digestion and elimination process. It also eliminates most of the unhealthy foods which would otherwise be stored in fat deposits thus leading to weight gain. If that's not enough a vegetarian diet also lowers the risk of cancer. It has been suggested that this is because often vegans and vegetarians try to stay away from pesticides, chemicals and preservatives. Over a 100 studies, including those conducted by the World Cancer Research Fund, have shown that we lower our risk of cancer by choosing a predominately plant-based diet.

However, aside from all of the health benefits of adopting a vegetarian diet there are also other benefits such as increased energy and and longer life span. Reduced portions of fat and sugar will naturally give you more energy. So eating lots of vegetables and grains will automatically increase your energy levels. Meanwhile, many studies, such as one conducted by William Costelli, MD who is the director of Farmingham Heart Study, have shown that vegans and vegetarians live 3 to 6 years longer than those on an animal-based diet.

For some, the choice to adopt a vegetarian diet has nothing to do with either the health or personal benefits. Instead, many choose this diet for the betterment of the world. A vegetarian diet makes more food available to feed the world population, is less taxing on the environment and the animals. However, regardless of the logic behind your choice to explore this alternative diet know that benefits are many and the rewards great.
